CCPC WEEKDAY NURSERY SCHOOL
The Weekday Nursery School (WNS) is an integral part of the Christian Education program at the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. We believe that young children learn best through hands-on experiences. Play is essential as the foundation for academic learning. We strive to provide opportunities for young children to explore the world around by using developmentally appropriate materials. Seven bright and fully equipped classrooms and a wonderful play yard provide for lively conversations, opportunities for crafts, creative play, running and climbing, plus lots of love and understanding from a staff of 28.
- Parent-led school visits begin in October with registration taking place through February.
- Applications are due in the WNS Office by the last day of February for the following school year.
- Children 1-5 years of age participate in this program operating September 11, 2006 through May 31, 2007.
- Four-year-olds attend five mornings or five afternoons; 3-year-olds attend two, three, or five mornings or 3 afternoons; 2-year-olds attend two mornings or afternoons, and Toddlers attend one morning a week. Morning sessions run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon while the afternoon sessions run from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Four afternoons a week we have our "Lunch Bunch" where 3- and 4-year-olds bring their lunch and spend time playing together until 2:30 p.m. Depending on the need, "Early Drop Off" is provided every morning from 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. in Westminster Hall.
Parents are encouraged and welcome to participate in a variety of ways in the operation of the Weekday Nursery School.
- In the 3- and 4-year-old classes, parents may choose to "co-op" - come in once or twice a month to assist in the classroom
- The annual Bake Sale held in November brings treats in time for Thanksgiving plus great school spirit.
- The end-of-the-year Family Barbecue is always a treat for the families in the school. It is an afternoon filled with great food, a moonbounce, face painting, singing, and storyteller or musician.
- Twice a year, October 21, 2006 and May 5, 2007, we have Parent Fix-up Days where parents "beautify" the school with painting, building shelves and cabinets, and yard work.
- Meetings with Parent Education speakers are open to the church families and friends. Topics are pertinent to issues for families of preschoolers. Further information and dates will be listed in the appropriate church bulletins.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
The After-School Program (ASP) is part of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church’s ministry to children and families in the community. Since 1987, the ASP has been dedicated to providing a safe, caring, and creative program to enrich 66 children in grades K-6th in their after-school hours. The Program provides children with the opportunity to interact with adults and other children in a comfortable and loving atmosphere.
.
Children of all races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to apply for enrollment. We take pride in the diverse group of students currently enrolled. Although the majority of the children attend the two neighborhood DC public schools, Lafayette Elementary and Murch Elementary, children from other public and private schools are welcome and, in fact, are already enrolled. The ASP staff members meet the students at Lafayette and walk them back to CCPC. The church van is used by other ASP staff members to pick up the students at Murch and transport them back to CCPC. The children who attend other schools arrive by transportation, which is arranged by their own parents.
.
The After-School Program is located on the third floor of the Education Wing. Once the children arrive from their respective schools, they are divided by grades into three groups in three large classrooms, with a teacher and an assistant in each room, and are provided with an afternoon snack. Afterwards, they are able to choose between opportunities to play in the large enclosed play yard adjacent to the Education Wing or to express their creativity with Lego structures, block towers or towns, crafts from recyclables, other artwork, or to be challenged by a computer game. Occasionally, the groups take field trips to nearby playgrounds. Homework time is set aside and monitored by the teachers and assistants in the classrooms so that help is available when needed.
.
The hours of operation are 3:00-6:30PM, Monday through Friday. Occasionally, because of severe weather or teachers’ meetings, the ASP opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 6:30 p.m. Also, when schools have to close at noon because of severe weather or meetings, the ASP staff will pick up the children at the two neighborhood schools and bring them back to CCPC until their parents come from work. The Program is closed for Federal holidays. In addition, there are field trips planned during Easter vacation when the Program operates full days, from 8 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.
.
The students in the After-School Program perform community service projects during the year by making holiday cards for the residents of Ingleside, cleaning nearby streams of trash, or making Christmas stockings for the patients at Children’s Hospital. Many sign up to be pen pals with children in after school programs in other parts of the United States.
.
Registration occurs in late March for those currently enrolled and mid-April for those new to the Program. We welcome visitors anytime in our classrooms, so please stop by any afternoon and see what is happening on the third floor. For more information please call the After-School Program office (202-966-8385, or email ASP@chevychasepc.org .
