Children's Ministry
Children are our Blessing
"Whoever welcomes a child...welcomes me."
Matthew 18:4-5
Can faith be made real to a child? Can a four-year-old minister to others? Can a third-grader understand scripture? At the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, the answer is a resounding yes! Here our ministry to our children and their families focuses on creating a place of belonging; a place where children are called by name; and a place where discipleship and a love of God and neighbor are nurtured. As church and family, we take seriously the baptismal covenant, which partners parents and congregation to help each child understand God’s purpose for his or her life.
During the program year (September through May), we offer a full range of graded Sunday School classes to teach our children from Preschool through Youth the important stories of the Bible, lessons of faith and our life together using the PCUSA curriculum, We Believe. Each Sunday, children and youth are encouraged to attend the 9:30 a.m. worship service with their families and then go to their classes after the Time with Children. Several times during the program year and during the summer, third graders and up worship with our church family to celebrate communion and to experience worship with their church family. Following worship, Age 5/Kindergarteners through Third Graders attend a short time of music to sing some of the great hymns and songs of the church before their teachers take them to their classrooms. Parents are asked to complete a new Sunday School Registration Form each year either in person or online so that we have updated information on all our children. Parents pick up their children in their classrooms at 10:45 a.m. or alert their child’s teacher in writing on the registration form if they are to meet their family in Chadsey Hall for brunch.
Special events throughout the year (Fall Festival, Deck the Halls, the Easter Festival, and other intergenerational events give younger children and families a chance to experience their faith in fun, spirit-filled ways, and contribute to our life together as a congregation.

Sunday Nursery Care
At the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church, we welcome infants and toddlers and their parents to the Nursery every Sunday morning. The Nursery is open prior to and until immediately following Sunday services in Room 108 on the first floor, alley side of the center building.
The Nursery provides a safe and warm environment for our youngest children, so that parents are free to attend services and adult education programs in the Church. The Nursery is filled with age-appropriate and stimulating toys. Children have the opportunity to work puzzles, “play house,” build with blocks, and play with cars, dollhouses, and balls. We play music and read books.
The Nursery is staffed by paid childcare employees, all of whom have had significant childcare experience and have completed the child protection training, CPR and First Aid that are mandatory for our caregivers. In addition, parent volunteers assist in the Nursery when additional help is needed.
For questions about our church's Nursery care, please contact Lynn Jostes, Associate Pastor for Christian Nurture.
