Hearthstones and Firesides Youth Groups
Hearthstones (grades 6 – 8) and Firesides (grades 9 – 12) are the youth groups at the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church. Under the guidance of dedicated volunteers, the groups normally meet on Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. After a dinner together, each group enjoys a time of fellowship, fun, games, and study.
Throughout the year, the youth groups participate in other special activities as time and scheduling permit. Some of these events have included mission projects with local soup kitchens, HandsOnDC, Habitat for Humanity, Broad Street Ministry, and other church-based projects. Members of Hearthstones and Firesides also participate in the annual youth ski trip, travel to Montreat, North Carolina every summer for the Montreat Youth Conference, and attend the Presbyterian Youth Triennium, a national gathering that occurs every three years at Purdue University. A longer mission trip is also typically offered every summer for youth.
The name “Firesides” has a long history. Firesides started in about 1926 when a small group of senior high youth began meeting informally. In 1930 CCPC’s pastor, Dr. Joseph Hillman Hollister, formally organized the group and held meetings in his home, where there would always be a blazing fire in the large living room. Today, the youth group meetings are held in Room 260, known as the Firesides Room.
